Chapter 11 Flashcards
(18 cards)
What is an artery?
Large blood vessels with thick walls
Carry oxygenated blood away from the heart
No values; high pressure prevent bad flow of blood
Pulse is a heart beat in an. artery
What is the exceptionfor arteries?
Pulmonary artery carries DEOXYGENATED blood from the heart to lungs
What is a capillary?
Small blood vessels linking arteries and veins
Walls are only one cell thick
Walls are only one cell thick on a capillary; this is easy for:
Substances( e.g. oxygen, glucose) to diffuse from blood into cells
Waste(e.g. CO2, H2O) to pass form cells into blood.
What is a vein?
Thinner walls than arteries Carry DEOXYGENATED blood TO the heart
Valves stop back flow of blood
What is the exception for veins?
Pulmonary vein carries OXYGENATED blood form lungs to the heart
What’s bloods job?
- Transports oxygen, carbon dioxide and water vapour.
- Transports food, waste and hormones
- Transports heat and keeps our body temperature at 37C
- Defend against diseases
What is the composition of blood.
Blood is 55% plasma, 45% cells
The 55% plasma contains 90% water and 10% dissolved substances-glucose, salts, amino acids, urea
The 45% cells contains red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets
What is the function for red blood cells?
Transports oxygen
What is the function of white blood cells?
Protection, make antibodies
What is the function of platelets?
Clot blood
What is the heart?
Organ that pumps blood around the body
What is the heart divided by?
Divided by septum
How many chambers are in the heart?
Four, two atria, two ventricles.
In the heart what stops blood flowing backwards?
Valves
What allows blood to flow out of heart into aorta and pulmonary artery?
Semi-lunar valves
What does blood pressure do?
Measures how easily the heart can pump oxygen and nutrients to their destination
What can high blood pressure be caused by?
Smoking
Obesity
Lack of physical activity
High salt diet
Alcohol consumption
Stress
Old age
Genetics
