Chapter 11 Independent Samples t Test Flashcards
1
Q
Conceptual understanding of independent samples t Test and when to use them
A
A test used to compare the means of two groups when the scores between the groups are independent of one another (e.g., often when we have a between-subjects design)
2
Q
Calculation of the independent samples t statistic
A
t= ( (Mx-My) - (μx-μy) )/ Sdifference
3
Q
Assumptions
A
- the dependent variable is measured as a scale variable
- participants are randomly selected
- the population of interest is normally distributed
- the independent variable is nominal
- we have independent samples (uncorrelated groups)
- we assume homogeneity of variance
4
Q
Homogeneity of variance
A
variances of our populations are the same
5
Q
Steps for hypothesis testing
A
- identify the populations, distribution, and assumptions. Then choose the appropriate test
- State the null and alternative hypotheses in words and symbolic notation
- Determine the characteristics of the comparison distribution. This will be the. distribution of differences between means
- Determine critical values
- Calculate test statistic
- Decide to reject or fail to reject the null hypothesis
