What does CPU stand for?
Central processing unit
What is a central processing unit?
Reads programs and converts each program’s instructions into actions
What size is a CPU?
A CPU could be a single chip in size
What is a CPU sometimes called?
“The Brain”
What does ROM stand for?
Read-only memory
What is Read-Only Memory?
Fixed memory that provides instructions needed to start the computer
What is a motherboard?
A printed circuit board that controls all of the system’s hardware
Includes: CPU, computer memory, modem, work card and controls the power
The motherboard includes;
CPU, computer memory, controls the power, etc.
Where is ROM?
Built into chips on the computer’s motherboard

The main type of memory in a computer

The information disappears

Windows and Mac OS X
What is an application program?
Gives the computer instructions for carrying our a specific task

Games, PowerPoint, social media, etc. (pretty much any app)
What are the two types of software?
Operating system and Application program
What is a peripheral device?
Peripheral devices either provide input to a computer or display output
What’s an example of a peripheral device?
Keyboard, mouse, monitor, video cameras, speakers, printer, audio, etc.
What is an input device?
Tools that send information to the computer
What is an example of an input device?
CD-ROMs, tapes, hard disks, floppy disks, keyboards, mouse, and various cameras
What is an output device?
Any device that displays information coming from the computer.
