46
How many chromosomes are grouped into pairs in a human body?
23
What do XX mean?
Female
What do XY mean?
Male
Describe a homologous chromosome?
Similar looking but not identical, they are also in a pair.
What do homologous chromosomes have in common?
Length, centromere location, and banding pattern.
Duplicate chromosomes have what chromatids?
Two sister chromatids, which are joined identical original chromosomes.
What do two sister chromatids contain?
Identical DNA material.
Later on in the replication station two sister chromatids of each duplicate chromosomes does what?
They separate and move into two new nuclei.
When the replicated chromosomes (sister chromosomes) are separated what are they called?
Individual chromosomes (daughter chromosomes)
The cell cycle is divided into two main stages, what are they?
Interphase and cell division.
A special type of cell division called meiosis occurs in what?
Germ cells.
Multicellular eukaryotic has 3 main functions what are they?
1) growth/development
2) maintenance/replace
3) repair/regenrate
