Media effect
Something that happens as a result of using media. Effects can usually be understood as being cognitivbe (influenceing our thoughts), affecting (influencing our feelings), or behavior (influencing our behaviors).
Hedonic/hedonism
A “pleasure of the flesh” usually characterized by immediate positive feelings.
Enjoyment
An entertainment media effect characterized by hedonic reactions to content.
Voyeuristic/voyeurism
watching intimate events between people from a distance
Eudaimonic/eudaimonia
A “pleasure of the mind” usually characterized by deliberation and insightfulness.
Appreciation
An entertainment media effect characterized by eudaimonic reactions to content.
Digital Age
An age of mass media characterized by using digital methods for message creation and transmission.
Analog
A storage medium that uses a physical device to store information for retrieval.
Digital
A storage medium that encodes info in binnary code to be decoded upon request by a computer processor.
Ephemereality
An object that does not physically exist
Moore’s Law
From computer science, a prediction that advnaces in technology allow fro more and more digital info to be stored ini smaller spaces
Binary
The language of computing technology; this is the storing of info in electrical circuits using a series of “1” and “0” commands to represent “on” or “off”
Interactivity
The degree to which a user can influence the form and content of onscreen content.
Task demand
The amount of an individual’s attention required by a given media channel for it to be used properly.
Virtual Reality
Technologies that simulate physical presence in virtual space.
Sandbox/sandbox video games
A type of video game that allows players to progress through different points in the game environment in a nonlinear fashion and allows players to solve in-game challenges in a number of different ways.
Parkour/ parkour gaming
A type of video game play common to sandbox video games in which players walk around and travel in the virtual space of the video game without focusing on in-game goals and challenges.
Burning
In communication technology, creating data images on a physical storage device for later payback.
Bandwidth
For a given data signal, the capacity and rate at which it can transmit digital information
Smartphone
A cellular phone with computer-like functionality, such as Web browser internal data processor, and hard drive for data storage.
