Flashcards in Chapter 12- Enzymes Deck (18):
What is metabolism?
All chemical reactions in an organism
What are reactants?
Chemicals that react with each other
What are products?
Chemicals produced as the result of the chemical reaction
What are anabolic reactions?
Invoke building up of molecules to form more complex molecules
What are catabolic reactions?
Break down of complex chemicals into simpler chemicals
How does one enzyme differ from another in terms of nature?
The sequence of amino acids varies
The way the protein is folded
What is a catalyst?
Chemical that has the ability to speed up/slow down chemical reactions without being used up
What is an enzyme?
Protein catalysts found in living organisms
What are Proteins?
Long chains of amino acids
What is a substrate?
Chemical in which an enzyme reacts
Catalase->Hydrogen Peroxide->Oxygen and water
What is an active site?
Place on enzyme where the substrate attached and reaction takes place
What is enzyme specificity?
Enzyme will only catalyse one reaction
Factors affecting enzyme reaction?
What is optimum pH?
pH at which the enzyme works beat
What is bio processing?
Use of organisms, cells or enzymes to make specific products
What are immobilised enzymes?
Biological catalysts attached to an inert material, chemically or physically
