chapter 12 interaction within ecosystems Flashcards
(26 cards)
what are the daily actions that affect the environment and negatively affect the survival of other living things
- wasting food
- using more electricity
- using excessive water
- creating excessive waste
how does wasting food negatively affect the environment
growing crops and livestock requires resources such as water, energy, minerals etc. and will waste the earth limited resources( deplete them)
how does using electricity negatively affect the environment
- obtained by burning fossil fuels
- fossil fuels are limited resources and can run out
- when more energy is used, the more fossil fuels are burnt to generate electricity
how does using water negatively affect the environment
- less than 1% of water which covers the earth is freshwater
- fresh water is a limited resource and as the consumption of freshwater in the world increases, freshwater becomes depleted more quickly
how does creating excessive waste negatively affect the environment
- the more excessive waste is created, the more waste needs to be disposed. Resulting in improper disposal of waste into the air, water and land.Polluting the environment
ways to conserve the environment
- Reducing the use of fossil fuels
- Reducing consumption
- Introducing environmentally friendly practices
4.Reforestation
what is a organism
an organism is a individual living thing
what is a habitat
A habitat is a natural home of an organism where it lives and reproduces
what is a population
A population is a group of organisms which live and reproduces in a particular habitat
what is a community
A community is made out of different populations of organisms living together in the same habitat
what is a ecosystem
An ecosystem is formed when a community of living organisms in a same habitat interact with each other and the environment
what is a environment
An environment is everthing surrounding an organism which affects its way of life
what are the two kinds of the environment
- physical environment
- living environment
what is a physical environment
it consists of non living organisms such as water, air, light and temperature
what is a living environment
it consists of living organisms which affects and influence the life of each other
what is a structural adaptation
it is a physical adaptation to help it survive in its habitat
what is a behavioural adaptation
different behaviours to help it adapt to the environment
what is mutalism
it is a relationship between two ogranisms where both organisms benefit from each other
what is parasitism
parasitism is when one organism benefits ( parasite) while the other does not (host)
how does light affect the organisms in a habitat
Light affects the growth and the distribution of plants and animals. Green plants need light to photosynthesise while animals need it to see
how does temperature affect the organisms in a habitat
affects the physical activities of animals and drop in temperature decreases how active an organism is
how does the ph affect the organisms in a habitat
Ph value of water in ponds, soil and sea affects the kind of organims can live in these habitats
what are decomposers
they feed on dead organisms and feaces. They release energy through resperation
how does decomposers play a role in the recycling of nutrients
- they prevent the earth from being covered by dead matter and animal waste
- they enrich the soil with nutrients that plants need to grow
- they conserve the envionment’s nutrients(natural resources) for future generations
