Favorite Son-

A

A candidate for national office who has support mostly from his home state. Each favored the intrests of their states.

Plurality-

A

The largest number of something, but less then a majority. The vote was split up among four candidates. Jackson won a plurality, or more votes than any other candidates.

A

Greater than half of a total number of something. No candidates had a majority, or more than half of the electral votes.

Mudslinging-

A

A method in election campaigns that uses gossip and lies to make an opponent look bad. The campaign grew ugly. Both parties used mudslinging, or insults meant to make candidates look bad.

Bureaucracy-

A

A system of government on which specialized tasks are carried out by appointed officials rather than by elected ones. Many states had changed their constitutions so that voters selected the presidential electors in their states. Jackson also thought that the federal bureaucracy was not democratic.

Spoils System-

A

Practice of handing out government jobs to supports; replacing government employees with the winning candidate’s supporters.Many workers were not elected officials. He used spoils system to fire many workers and replace them with people who had supported this election.

Nominating Convention-

A

A meeting in which representative members of a political party choose candidates to run for important elected offices. The caucus system was replaced by special state meetings called nominating convention. At these meetings. elected representatives voted for party candidates.

Relocate-

A

To move to another place. As settlers moved farther south and west, many people wanted the federal government to force the Five Civilized Tribes to relocate. Settlers needed more land. They want to take it from the Native Americans.

Veto-

A

To reject a bill and prevent it from becoming a law. Clay and Webster helped the Bank get a new charter from Congress before the old charter ran out. They thought he would no veto the new charter, or prevent it from becoming a law.

A

John Quincy Adams, he was chosen winner by the representatives.

What changes taking place in the counrty contributes to Jacksons victory?-

A

When Jackson took office everyone was allowed to vote. Insteadof just rich white boys, women, blacks, poor, etc. was allowed to vote.
