Chapter 12: trace elements Flashcards
what are the trace elements
iron
zinc
manganese
selenium
iodine
copper
fluoride
chromium
molybdenum
* less than 100mg/day. hard to remove from diet
iron
animal iron = hemme
plant iron = nonheme
*tranferritin transport protein in blood
*vitamin c help absorption
*absorbed into intestinal mucosal cell
how does iron help
deliver oxygen to cells
- hemoglobin = red blood cells. O2 to cells
- myoglobin = muscle
* drug metabolism
* immune function
* antioxidant enzyme
iron deficiencies
- Iron depletion: decrease iron stress, reduce territin lvls, no physical symptom
- iron deficiency erythropoiesis: decrease iron transport, reduce transferrin, reduce production of heme
- anemia: low production of normal RBC, heme. inadequate hemoglobin to transport O2, pale, fatigue, low work performance. bad immune
IMAPCT LACK
- iron store, iron transport, hemoglobin
iron toxicity
accumulate in tissue like heart and liver
* hemochromatosis: weight loss, fatigue, abdominal pain, iron deposit in skin, iron poisoning
- make sure to donate blood!
