Q

how does iron help

A

deliver oxygen to cells
- hemoglobin = red blood cells. O2 to cells
- myoglobin = muscle
* drug metabolism
* immune function
* antioxidant enzyme

Q

iron deficiencies

A
  1. Iron depletion: decrease iron stress, reduce territin lvls, no physical symptom
  2. iron deficiency erythropoiesis: decrease iron transport, reduce transferrin, reduce production of heme
  3. anemia: low production of normal RBC, heme. inadequate hemoglobin to transport O2, pale, fatigue, low work performance. bad immune

IMAPCT LACK
- iron store, iron transport, hemoglobin

Q

iron toxicity

A

accumulate in tissue like heart and liver
* hemochromatosis: weight loss, fatigue, abdominal pain, iron deposit in skin, iron poisoning
- make sure to donate blood!
