Chapter 13 neuronal communication 13.1 Flashcards
(6 cards)
What are the changes that can occur in the internal environment?
Blood glucose concentration
Internal temperature
Water potential
Cell pH
What are the changes that can occur in the external environment?
Humidity
External temperature
Light intensity
New or sudden sound
What does homeostasis mean?
To maintain a relatively constant internal environment
What is cell signalling?
When one cell releases a chemical that has an effect on another cell ( the target cell).
When transferring signals a long distance which is the best option neural or hormonal?
Hormonal e.g. cells of the pituitary gland secrete antidiuretic hormone (ADH) which acts on cells in the kidneys to maintain water balance in the body.
When transferring signals a short distance/ locally which is the best option neural or hormonal?
Neural, between neurones and synapses, the signal used is a neurotransmitter.
