Stressor
An event or pressure that places a demand on the individual

What is primary appraisal
The interpretation of a stimulus as being stressful or not
What is secondary appraisal?
determining if a stressor is something you can handle or not
Chronic stressors
Sources of stress that occur continuously or repeatedly
Occupational burnout
A state of physical, emotional, and mental exhaustion resulting from a long term involvement in an emotionally demanding situation accompanied by a lowered performance and motivation.
Cataclysmic events
Less control of a cataclysmic event occurring.
like a hurricane, tornado, national disasters like 9/11

How do woman handle stress?
- Report more stressors than men
- report higher problems with eating - use food to deal with stress

- take on more responsablities
How do men deal with stress?
- More likely to under report
- more likely to drink
- game, play sports, workout
West coast
Stress levels decrease most likely due to nicer weather
North east
Higher levels of stress reported likely bc of coast of living and bad weather
South
higher levels of stress due to health related problems
Does money help lower stress?
Yes, it helps you meet your basic needs of living
Type A individuals
easily aroused hostility, impatience, a sense of time urgency, and competitive achievement strivings
Type B individuals
Relaxed and easy going
Lacking sense of urgency
Cynical hostility
negative beliefs, thoughts and attitudes about other people’s motives, intentions and trustworthiness.
What are the 3 C’s of Hardiness?
- Commitment - committed to doing things that better them
- Control - viewing yourself in the driver seat
- Challenge - seeing set backs as something that helps you - ways to improve
Exposure
A person who is exposed to a traumatic event
could happen to you or you can witness it
Avoidance
Will avoid people or situations that remind them of the event
lead them to becoming isolated developing depression
