Chapter 14 Flashcards
(6 cards)
Difference between dispersal and dispersion
Dispersal- act
Dispersion- result
Dispersion patterns
Clumped
Random
Uniform
Survivorship curves? Types?
Plot survivorship as the proportion of individuals from an initial population
Type 1- few offspring, good care
Type 2- constant
Type 3- lots of offspring, not good care
Exponential growth model
Gives an idealized picture of unlimited population growth, no restrictions on the abilities of the organisms to grow, live and reproduce, populations will all eventually be limited by the resources available
Logistic growth model
A description of idealized population growth that is slowed by limiting factors as the population size increases
Reproductive strategies
Reproductive investment- how much does an organism invest in offspring
Trade offs- balance demands of reproduction and survival
R-selection - try to maximize # of individuals (brute force reproduction)
K-selection - better off having less offspring and investing more time in each
Parental care- happens in both
