A charge usually of money imposed by authority (government) on persons or property tax for public purposes (money people have to pay the government- *main source of income

What are the 3 categories of taxes?
- Income- payroll, investments, capital gains, etc.
- Property- real estate, estate (death)
- Goods/Services- sales excise (gas), SIn (tobacco, alcohol), user fees (airline taxes, rental car, toll roads, etc) Luxury (boats, cars etc)
What are the 3 major types of taxes?
- Proportional- same percentage of taxation on everyone regardless of income, Ex: sales tax
- Progressive- a tax which takes a larger percentage from those who earn a higher income, Ex: Income
- Regressive- a tax that takes a larger percentage of income from low-income groups than from high- income groups, Ex: gas, cigarettes & alcohol
