CHAPTER 15 Flashcards
(7 cards)
What are the types of behaviours of each type of polymers?
-Aligned/Crosslinked/Network polymers: Brittle behavior
-Semicrystalline polymers: Plastic behavior
-Elastomer polymers: Elastic behavior
What factors affect Tm and Tg?
-Tm and Tg increase with increasing chain stiffness
-Tm affected by regularity of repeat unit arrangements
How is chain stiffness increased?
With the presence of:
1) Bulky side groups
2) Polar groups or side groups
3) Chain double bonds and aromatic chain groups
What do fillers do polymers?
Improve tensile strength and abrasion resistance, toughness
What do plasticizers do to polymers?
Reduce the glass transition
Transforms brittle polymer to a ductile one
What do stabilizers do to polymers?
Antioxidants
UV protectants
What do lubricants do to polymers?
Allow easier processing
Polymer slides through dies easier
