Chapter 15 Flashcards
(7 cards)
What is hydrolysis
Chemical reaction involving water or an aqueous solution of a hydroxide that causes the breaking of a bond in a molecule - splitting into two products
What is the hydrolysis of haloalkane example of?
Nucleophilic sub
Halogen replaced by OH group
Alcohol and halide formed
C-X bond breaks by heterolytic fission
Test for rate of hydrolysis of haloalkanes?
Add ethanol to each haloalkane and add silver nitrate
Why does the strength of C-X bond decrease down the group
Less energy is required to break the bond down the group
Conditions and reagents for conversion from haloalkane to alcohol
Sodium hydroxide
Reflux
Why is ethanol used in rate of hydrolysis of haloalkanes?
To mix batter and haloalkane as they are insoluble in water
What else takes factor in the rate of hydrolysis
Whether it is primary, secondary or tertiary
Primary takes one step mechanism whereas tertiary takes 2 step mechanism
