Chapter 16 Flashcards
(13 cards)
Longitudinal Wave?
A wave that makes the particles in the material that carries the wave move back and forth along the direction the wave travels.
Vibration?
A rapid, back-and-forth motion that can occur in solids, liquids or gases.
Medium?
A material in which a wave travels
Compression?
A region of a longitudinal wave where the particles in the medium are closest together
Rarefaction?
A region of a longitudinal wave, where the particles are farthest apart
What are the two factors that affect the speed of sound waves?
Density and medium
Why doesn’t energy travel fast in gas particles?
Gas particles are farther apart.
How do sound waves travel?
They travel through energy
Outer ear?
Collects sounds
Middle ear?
Amplifies sound
Inner ear?
Contains small, fluid filled chambers called cochlea
What can cause you to have hearing loss?
Listening to loud music
Sound waves?
Longitudinal waves that can only travel through matter.
