Advance Scheduling
Booking an appointment several weeks or even months in advance
Cluster Scheduling
The scheduling of similar appointments together at a certain time of the day or week
Double-booking System
A system of scheduling in which two or more patients are booked for the same appointment slot, with the assumption that both patients will be seen within the scheduled period
Itinerary
A detailed travel plan listing dates and times for specific transportation arrangements and events, the location of meetings and lodgings, and phone numbers
Locum Tenens
A substitute physician hired to see patients while the regular physician is away from the office
Matrix
The basic format of an appointment book, established by blocking off times on a schedule during which the practitioner is able to see patients
Minutes
A report of what happened and what was discussed and decided at a meeting
Modified-wave Scheduling
A scheduling system similar to the wave system, with patients arriving at planned intervals during the hour, allowing time to catch up before the next hour begins
No-show
A patient who does not call to cancel and does not come to an appointment
Open-hours scheduling
A system of scheduling in which patients arrive at the practice at their convenience and are seen on a first-come, first-served basis
Overbooking
Scheduling appointments for more patients than can reasonably be seen in the time allowed
Time-specified scheduling
A system of scheduling in which patients arrive at regular, specified intervals, ensuring the practice a steady stream of patients throughout the day
Underbooking
Leaving large, unused gaps in the providers schedule, an approach that does not make the best use of provider (or staff) time
Walk-in
A patient who arrives without an appointment
Wave Scheduling
A system of scheduling in which the number of patients seen each hour is determined by dividing the hour by the length of the average visit and then giving that number of patients all appointments at the beginning of each hour
