Bohemia, because king Ferdinand wanted to suppress Protestants and assert royal power over nobles.

German Emperors lack of power because of rival princes and religion (north was Protestant and south was catholic)

Protestant nobleman tossed royal officials out a window and it caused a revolt which widened into a European war.

Soldiers for hire who burned villages, destroyed crops, and killed without mercy. This cause depopulation, disease and famine. 1/3 of population gone.

Peace of Westphalia, brought European peace and settle other international issues.

France, territory in Spanish and German frontiers.
How was German land divided because of the war?
More than 360 separate states “one for every day of the week”.
What were German governments like after the division?
Each had its own government, currency, church, armed forces, and foreign policy.
