Chapter 18 And 19 Flashcards
(27 cards)
Specific humidity
Active amount of water vapor in the air at a certain time and place
condensation
The change from water vapor to a liquid water
Saturated
The most concentrated solution possible at a given temperature
Relative humidity
The maximum amount of water Holding capacity
Psychrometer
An instrument that works on the principle that evaporation causes cooling this measures humidity
Dewpoint
The temperature at which saturation occurs in condensation begins
Condensation nuclei
When fog or clouds form the water vapor is condensed in tiny particles
Fog
Forms when the surface cools the war moist air above it condenses
Precipitation
Any form of water that falls from the cloud to earth surface
Sleet
Frozen rain droplets
Freezing rain
Supercooled rain droplets that freeze instantly when they hit a solid surface
Hail
Small nearly spherical pieces of ice made up of concentrated layers formed by the frozen layers of water and falls from the clouds
Windward
Direction upwind from the last point of reference
Leeward
The downward direction of wind
Air pressure
The weight of the atmosphere as it pushes down on earth
Barometer
An instrument that measures changes in air pressure
Millibar
Unit of measurement for air pressure
Isobar
The line that Joyanne’s points having the same air pressure such as a topographical map does with elevation
Pressure gradient
You find the pressure gradient by dividing the pressure change by the distance over which the pressure changes
Coriolis effect
The effect of earths rotation that causes the deflection of moving objects
Jetstream
And air current that forms a narrowband a very strong westerly winds
Polar front
The boundary at which air flowing away from the polar regions collides with warmer air
Middle latitudes
The area between about 30° and 60° latitude
Intertropical convergence zone a.k.a. the doldrums and ITCZ
The low-pressure zone at the equator where the winds from the north and south hemispheres meet
