Chapter 19: Blood Flashcards
(17 cards)
What are the generic components of blood?
- Blood Plasma
- Cells
- Cell Fragments
What is blood?
Connective Tissue with a liquid matrix
What is the normal temperature of blood?
~38 C, higher than body temp
What is normal pH of blood?
7.35 - 7.45 (slightly alkaline)
What percentage does blood make up of extracellular fluid?
Blood makes up 20% of extracellular fluid… 5L of blood - depends on a persons weight
What are the three functions of blood?
Transportation, Regulation, and Protection
What does blood transport? Describe
- O2 (from lungs)
- CO2
- nutrients (from gastrointestinal)
- hormones to target tissues
- heat (could be sent to body surface or body core)
- wastes (could go urinary, lungs, depends on type of waste)
What does blood regulate? Describe
- Homeostasis of body fluids
- pH of body fluids - dependent on buffers present in blood, important for enzymes to function
- Body temperature
- Osmotic Pressure - how capillary exchange happens, decides water content of cells
What does blood protect?
- Clto formation with blood loss
- Blood carries: WBC’s, antibodies, inferons (useful gainst viruses), complements
When we centrifuge blood, what does blood separate into? What are the % distributions of the separated blood?
- Plasma - 55%
- Buffy coat - WBC’s and platelets
- RBC’s - 45%
What percent of body weight is blood?
8%
What are the general components of blood?
Blood Plasma and Dissolved Solutes
What comprises blood plasma?
- Mostly water ~90%
- Proteins (made by liver)
- Dissolved Solutes
What are the specificly named proteins in blood plasma?
Albumin - contributor to blood colloidal osmotic pressure
Globulin - immune system
Fibrinogen - blood clotting
Angiotensinogen
What are the dissolved solutes in blood plasma?
electrolytes
nutrients
gases
regulatory substances
waste products
What are the formed elements of blood?
- RBC’s
- WBC’s - immune system, low in number but go up with infection or disease
- platelets - broken down cells
What are platelets made of?
Broken down Megakaryocite
