what is active and subjective perception?
active: select, organize, interpret(tend to be around things that align with our values/beliefs)
subjective: your uniquely constructed meaning(there is a gap between what we can do and what we think we can do)
what is perceptual constancy?
the idea that your expiriences lead you to see the world in a way that is hard to change.
what is selective perception?
tendency to hear and see only what we want to
what is selective retention?
tendency to retain things that reinforce your beliefs
what is figure and ground?
figure is the focal point of your attention. ground is the background against which your focused attention occurs
what is proximity?
principle that objects physically close to one another are seen as a unit or group
what is similarity?
elements grouped together cause they share attributes
describe fundamental attribution error
when others succeed, it is due to the situation. when others fail, it is due to personal characteristics
describe self-serving bias
when we succeed, it is due to our personal qualities, when we fail it is due to circumstances
describe symbolic interactionism
the process of the development of your sense of self as a result of your interaction with others
