Chapter 2 Flashcards
(14 cards)
What is matter?
Anything that has mass and volume
What can pure substances be divided into?
Elements ands compounds
Impure substances are also called as mixtures. What are the two types of mixtures?
Homogenous and Heterogenous
Impure substances are also called as mixtures. What are the two types of mixtures?
Homogenous and Heterogenous
Copper is a pure substance. State what is meant by pure substance
Substances that are made up of only one kind of entity
Define the term compound
Entity of matter that has 2 or more elements bonded together in constant proportion by mass
What are isotopes?
Isotopes are variants of the same element with same atomic number and proton number, but different mass number and number of neutrons
Why do isotopes of the same element have identical properties?
Since reactivity of atoms depends on electrons only
What does the term radioactive mean?
Isotopes of certain elements emit high energy radiation due to unstable nucleus. This phenomenon is called radioactivity
What are the uses of C-14 (carbon - 14)
MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) and detecting ulcer causing bacteria
What is H-2 (deuterium) used for
Nuclear reactors, since D2O is dense it reduces the speed of high energy neutrons, preventing an uncontrolled chain reaction
What is Cobalt-60 used for?
It is a radiation source to detect cancer
What is Iodine 131 used for?
Treating hyperthyroidism
What is Plutonium- 238 used for?
Making electricity in space
