Chapter 2 Flashcards
(7 cards)
Define the Integrated Pest Management (IPM) Process
A decision-making process that prevents pests from becoming a problem, and what steps to take if a problem occurs
Name the 6 elements of ‘Integrated Pest Management’ (IPM)
Prevention, Identification, Monitoring, Thresholds, Treatment, Evaluation
Why is Prevention important in IPM?
It is more economically feasible and gives better long-term results than treatments
What are some common Prevention methods?
Selecting plants/animals that are resistant to disease/insects. Manage growing conditions to produce healthy plants. Eliminate food/habitat for pests by cleaning spills. Prevent animal access to buildings by sealing cracks/holes.
Why is Identification important in IPM?
Enables pest managers to choose effective control methods, minimizes risk of beneficial species being mistaken for pests and prevents unnecessary treatments
What Identification biological knowledge should you know?
Name of pest, life cycle of pest, best time to treat, number of treatments needed, beneficial organisms related to pest
