What is a colony?
A territory controlled by another country.
What is an empire?
A network of colonies controlled by a single country.
What is imperialism?
A country extending its control over other countries, often using economic or military means.
What is monopoly?
When only one company or group is allowed to sell or trade a product in a certain area.
What is a Seigneurial System?
A system based on nobles (or seigneurs) who rented land to farmers (or habitants).
What is a habitant?
A Francophone farmer of New France.
Who were the coureur de bois?
A Canadian trader (“runner of the woods”) who paddled on long journeys into the wilderness to trade for furs with the First Nations.
Who were the Métis?
People of mixed First Nations and European ancestry.
What are the four reasons for European exploration/ imperialism in the 16th Century?
Economics

What is a bishop and what is their role?
The bishop is the head of the church and has a leading role in politics.
What were some of the intendant’s responsibilities?
In charge of the day-to-day affairs of the colony.
Supervised courts and made sure the colonists were looked after.

Who is the governor and did they do?
The governor is the most powerful member of the S.C.
The were also the King’s representative and they took charge of the defence of the colony and its relationships with allies and enemies.
What was the silk road?
The route travelled by Europeans crossing through Asia and Eastern Europe used for trading.
Who were the Fille du Roi?
The women known as the “king’s daughters” who were sent to New France to become wives.
