what is litigation?
the system of resolving disputes in court
what is a class action?
allows a single person, or a small group of people to sue on behalf of a larger group of claiments
what is professional liability insurance?
allows a client to recieve compensation from a lawyers insurnace company if the lawyer has acted carelessly
what is an assurance fund?
provides compensation to people who have been hurt by dishonest lawyers
what is a pleading?
the documents used to identify the issues and clarify the nature of the dispute
what is a limitation period?
is a period of time within which an action must be started
what is a statement of claim?
a document in which the plaintiff outlines the nature of the complaint
what is a statement of defense?
a document in which the defendent sets out its version of the facts and indicates how it intends to deny the claim
what is a counterclaim?
a claim the defendent makes against the plaintiff
what is a reply?
is a document in which a party responds to a statement of defence
what is a demand for particulars?
requires the other side to provide additional information
what is an examination for discovery?
is a process in which the parties ask each other questions to obtain information about their case
what is a judgement debtor?
is a defendant who has been found liable and ordered to pay money to the plaintiff
what is a contingency fee agreement?
requires a client to pay their lawyer only if the law suit is succesful

what is an administrative tribunal?
is a body between government and court that resolves issues and disputes that arise in administrative law
what is arbitration?
a process in which a neutral third party (an arbitrator) imposes a desicion on the parties
