Chapter 2 2/3 Flashcards
Molecule
Composed two or more atoms chemically combined to form a structure behaves as an independent unit
Compound
Substance resulting from a combination of two or more different types of Atoms
Molecular mass
A molecule or compound can be determined by adding up the atomic masses of its atoms
Intermolecular forces
Are the weak electrostatic attractions that exist between oppositely charged parts of molecules are between ions and molecules
Hydrogen bond
If the positively charged hydrogen of one molecule is attracted to a negatively charged oxygen nitrogen or fluorine of another molecule
Solubility
Is the ability of one substance dissolves in another
Dissociate
When ionic compounds dissolved in water or separate from another because cations are attracted to the negative ends of water molecules and anions are attractive to the positive ends of water molecules
Electrolytes
Cations and anions that dissociate in water because they have the capacity to contact an electric current is the flow of charged particles
Chemical reaction
When Atoms ions molecules or compound interact either to form or break chemical bonds
Reactants
The substance the Enter into chemical reaction
Products
Substance that results from the chemical reaction
Synthesis reaction
Went to a more reactants chemically combined to form a new and larger product
Anabolism
The synthesis reactions occurring in the body
Dehydration reactions
Synthesis reactions in which water is a product
Reversible reaction
The reaction can run the opposite direction so that the products are converted back to the original reactance
