Chapter 2 Flashcards
What is matter?
Anything that occupies space or has mass
How do you know it’s a physical property of a material?
By how the particles that compose the material relate to one another
What is chemical properties of a material?
How the material acts in front of other materials or how it changes composition when sufficient energy is added to it
How particles are in a material.
Density
How easy a material can be hammered into shapes
Malleability
How easy materials can be drawn into wires.
Ductility
To conduct heat and electricity
Conductivity
Combines with oxygen
Oxidizes
Burns easily.
Flammable
What is a mixture?
A material that can be separated into two or more pure substances by physical change.
What is a physical change?
Changes in both state and shape of a material
What is chemical change?
It changes the identity of a material
What are the two types of mixtures?
Homogeneous and heterogeneous
What is a pure substances?
Only consist of one type of matter
What are the two type of ions?
Cations and anions
What is a element?
A pure substance that can not be broken down into a simpler substance by ordinary chemical means
What are atoms?
Basic particles that make up elements
