Chapter 2 Flashcards
(12 cards)
Solid
A solid has a definite shape and definite volume
Fluid
A substance that flows
Crystalline solid
Solids that are made up of crystals
Surface tension
An inward force or pull, among molecules in a liquid that brings the molecules to the surface closer together.
Amorphous solid
A solid that does not melt and particles are not arranged in a regular pattern
Viscosity
A liquid’s resistance to flow
Gas
A fluid that has both indefinite shape and volume
Pressure
The pressure of the gas is the force of its outward push
Charles’s Law
When the temperature of a gas at constant pressure is increased, its volume increases. When temperature of a gas at constant pressure is decreased, its volume decreases.
Inversely proportional
When the product of two variables is constant, the variables are inversely proportional to each other.
Directly proportional
When a graph of two variables is a straight line passing through the origin, the variables are said to be directly proportional to each other.
Boyle’s law
When the pressure of a gas at constant temperature is increased, the volume of the gas decreases. When the pressure is decreased, the volume increases.
