Activities of Daily Living (ADL)
Common daily tasks such as, dressing, eating, grooming, elimination or bathing.
Assisted Living Facility (ALF)
Assisted living facilities are for people needing assistance with ADLs but wishing to live as independently as possible for as long as possible. Assisted living exists to bridge the gap between independent living nursing homes.
Advocate
Is a person who defends another person.
Ambulation
To walk in an upright position, or assist someone to walk.
Assault
An attempt or threat to cause physical harm to a resident.
Confidentiality
Keeping information about another person to oneself and sharing it only under appropriate circumstances.
DNR & DNAR
Do Not (Attempt) to Resuscitate. An order stating a resident should not be revived.
Empathy
Ability to experience the feelings and thoughts of another person.
Geriatrics
Related to the elder. (old people or aging).
Gerontology
Is the study of the elderly.
Health Team
All health care personnel, plus the resident’s and the resident’s family; all are involved in returning the resident to the highest level of health and well-being.
Invasion of Privacy
Exposing a person’s private affairs, or using a person’s name or photograph without their permission.
Living Will
Legal document that outlines how much medical care a person wants to receive and whether the person wants to be resuscitated if in a near-death or vegetative state.
Long Term Care (LTC)
Medical and personal care that is provided to long-term resident’s of nursing homes or rehabilitation centers.
Negligence
Failure to act in a reasonable, caring manner toward a resident.
Ombudsman
A public official designated to investigate resident complaints.
Physical Abuse
Physical violence or pain inflicted on a resident.
Psychological Abuse
Emotional or psychological manipulation used to compel a resident to do something they do not want or that is not in their best interests.
Sexual Battery
Any non-consensual touching of the intimate parts of a resident.
Simple Battery
Any form of non-consensual, harmful, or insulting contact on the resident, even if no injury occurs.
Policy
An official statement of the steps to take to do something at a facility.

-Give medications
-Insert tubes or other medical devices into body open.
-Take verbal or telephone orders from doctors
-Perform procedure with a sterile technique
-Discuss info about the planned medical or surgical
treatment with the resident or resident’s family.
-Discuss info concerning a resident with anyone except
members of the LTC team (HEPA)
-Make diagnosis or prescribe treatments or medications
for residents
-Ignore an order or request to do something just
because you are not trained or legally authorized to do
it
