Chapter 2-A (Composite Polymers) Flashcards
What are examples of composite polymers?
Elastane
Gore-Tex
Carbon fibre reinforced plastic
Glass reinforced plastic
What are the properties and characteristics of elastane?
High elasticity
Very light
Non absorbent
What are the properties and characteristics of Gore-Tex?
Waterproof
Windproof
Breathable
What are the properties and characteristics of carbon fibre reinforced plastic?
High strength to weight ratio (greater than steel)
Can be formed into complex shapes
Light weight
Low thermal conductivity
High tensile strength
What are the properties and characteristics of glass reinforced plastic?
Can be coloured
Chemical resistance
High strength to weight ratio
Very tough
High tensile strength
How is elastane manufactured?
Fibre is spun from polyurethane solution
How is Gore-Tex manufactured?
Woven very finely and then layered
How is carbon fibre reinforced plastic manufactured?
Woven fibre sheet cut to the desired shape and size
Sheet is saturated with resin over a former
Resin is cured using heat
How Is glass reinforced plastic manufactured?
A mould or former is used
Apply release agent
Fibreglass is laid in layers
In between each layer it is saturated with resin
A roller is used to compact the layers and remove air bubbles
Leave to cure (heat or time)
What are example uses of elastane?
Swimming suits
Sports clothing
Cycling clothing
What are example uses of Gore-Tex?
Outdoor clothing
What are example uses of carbon fibre reinforced plastic?
Canoe shells
Racing car parts
Racing bikes
What are example uses of glass reinforced plastic?
Wind turbine blades
Kayaks
Boats
