Chapter 2: Continous Distillation Flashcards
(7 cards)
What is condensation
When vapour turns to liquid
Explain the key principle: Latent heat of condensation
🔥 How Does It Happen?
1. Vapour is hot = bcs it contains latent heat energy
2. When vapour touches a cold surface which is cooler than the vapour’s saturation temperature,
vapour loses heat
3. As it loses heat, the vapour condensed
4. This lost heat is called latent heat of condensation — and it’s released to the surface it touched.
What does Xf denotes
Mole fraction of MVC of feed
Then what does the mole fraction of LVC of feed denotes?
1-Xf
Where and when does mass transfer between MVC and LVC occur?
- At each tray or packing
- Vapour contacts liquid and mass transfer of LVC and MVC occurs
For top (distillate) and Bottom (bottom liquid), which part contains more MVC and LVC
Top : more MVC cause easy to boil
Bottom: more LVC cause hard to boil
What is reflux ratio
quantity of liquid returned to the distillation column to quantity of liquid withdrawn as distillate
