(36 cards)
What is the oesophagus made up of?
Thick muscular wall
What does the oesophagus do?
Carries food from the mouth to the stomach
What is the role of the stomach?
To store and digest food
What do the glands in the stomach wall produce? (2)
Enzymes for digesting protein
Mucus
What is the mucus produced in the stomach for?
To prevent the stomach being digested by its own enzymes
How is the surface area of the small intestine increased?
By villi and microvilli
What is the purpose of the small intestine?
To further digest food
What does the large intestine absorb?
Water
What is formed in the large intestine?
Faeces
What egestion?
The process in which the faeces are periodically removed
What enzymes does the salivary gland produce?
Amylase
What does amylase break down?
Starch
What is starch broken down into?
Maltose
What are the two stages of digestion?
Physical breakdown and chemical digestion
Where is the pancreas situated?
Below the stomach
What enzymes does the pancreas secrete?
Protease, lipase and amylase
What does protease break down?
Proteins
What does lipase break down?
Lipids
What are lipids broken down into?
Glycerol and fatty acids
What are proteins broken down into?
Amino acids
What is assimilation?
Where molecules are incorporated into body issues and used in processes within the body
What do hydrolases do?
Catalyse hydrolysis
What is a monomer?
An individual molecule which makes up a chain
What is the general formula for a monosaccharide?
(CH2O)n
