Chapter 2 - Intro To Matter Flashcards
(27 cards)
What is chemistry?
The study of the properties of matter and how matter changes
What is matter?
Anything that has mass and takes up space
What is a substance?
A single kind of matter that is pure, meaning it always has a specific makeup-or composition-and a specific set of properties
What are two kinds of properties every kind of matter has?
Physical and chemical properties
What is a physical property?
A characteristic of a pure substance that can be observed without changing it into another substance
What is a chemical property?
Characteristic of a pure substance that describes its ability to change into different substances
What is an element?
Pure substances that can’t be broken down into other substances by chemical or physical means
What is an atom?
Basic particle from which all elements are made
What is a chemical bond?
Force of attraction between two Adams
What are molecules?
Groups of two or more atoms held together by chemical bonds
What is a compound?
pure substance made of two or more elements chemically combined in a set ratio
What is a chemical formula?
A combination of symbols that represents the elements in a compound and their proportions
What is a mixture?
Two or more substances that are combined together but not chemically combined
What is a heterogeneous mixture?
A mixture in which pure substances are unevenly distributed throughout the mixture
What is a homogeneous mixture?
A mixture in which substances are evenly distributed throughout the mixture
What is a solution?
A well mixed mixture containing a solvent and at least one solution that has the same properties throughout
What is weight?
Measure of the force of gravity on a substance
What is mass?
Measure of how much matter is in an object
What is the international system of units?
The system of units (SI) used by scientists to measure the properties of matter
What is volume?
The amount of space that matter occupies
What is density?
The ratio of the mass of a substance to its volume
What are the three types of elements?
Metals, non metals, and metalloids
What are the two types of pure substances?
Compounds and elements
What are the two types of mixtures?
Homogeneous and heterogeneous
