Chapter 2 - Nervous System Flashcards
What does the N.S. regulate?
emotions, sensations/perceptions, and actions of muscles and internal organs
Describe a neuron
a nerve cell; has cell body and two extensions (axon and dendrite)
what do axons do?
conduct information away from cell body
what do dendrites do?
conduct info toward cell body
what are fascicles?
bundles of axons
endoneurium
wraps around each axon in PNS
perineurium
wraps around each fascicle in PNS
epineurium
wraps around groups of fasicles (nerves) in PNS
afferent neurons
sensory information toward CNS; sensory nerves
efferent neurons
motor impulses away from CNS; motor nerves
mixed nerve
both afferent and efferent fibers
cranial nerves
emerge from brainstem within skull; 12 pairs; innervate face and neck
oh oh oh to touch and feel very good velvet ah (name)
some say marry money but my brother says big brains matter more (function)
Spinal nerves
emerge from spinal cord; connect peripheral nerves to CNS; 31 pairs; cervical (8), thoracic (12), lumbar (5), sacral (5), coccygeal (1)
first pair exits b/w C-1 and skull
subsequent exit through intervertebral foramen
C1-C7 exit above vertebrae
C8-L5 exit below vertebrae
spinal nerves: ventral nerve roots
motor
spinal nerves: dorsal nerve roots
sensory
