Chapter 2 Skeletal System Flashcards
(21 cards)
Compact bone
Outer hard part of all bones
Cancellous bone
Spongy inside portion of bones
Diaphysis
Main shaft of bone
Medullary canal
Hollow and contains marrow
Endosteum
Membrane that goes around medullary canal
Osteoclasts
What is inside the endosteum. Responsible for a process of breaking down old bone and replacing with new bone
Metaphysis
Transition from the end of each diaphysis to epiphysis
Pressure epiphyses
Where the pressure of other bones lay upon
Traction epiphyses
Location where tendons attach to bones and cause pulling, traction or force
Periosteum
Cover all of the bone contains nerves as well as blood vessels. Has lots of pain receptors
Long bones
Length is greater than width
Examples of long bones
Fibula, tibia, clavicle, humerus , radius, ulna, phalanges
Short bones
Equal in dimensions like height, length and width. Usually cubed shape
Examples of short bones
Tarsals and carpals
Flat bones
Tend to be curved and not flat
Examples of flat bones
Cranial bones like parietal, occipital, frontal, temporal and scapula
Irregular bones
Have variety of mixed shapes don’t fit into other categories
Examples of irregular bones
Vertebrae, sacrum, and coccyx
Sesamoid bones and example
Small bones located where tendons cross the end of long bones. Ex. Patella
Osteoporosis
Loss of normal bone density or bone mass
Osteomyelitis
Infection of the bone caused by bacteria. Open fracture is more concerning then closed fracture for these infections
