Chapter 2- Structure & Function Of Cells Flashcards
(30 cards)
Each living cell is a like a what?
Small compartment
A cell has an outer boundary called what?
The cell membrane or cell wall (depends on the cell)
What is the liquid called inside the cell?
The cytosol
What does the cytosol consist of?
It consists mainly of water and many dissolved substances
DNA controls what activities of the cell
The metabolic activities of the cell (metabolic activity -any chemical reaction in the cell)
Prokaryotic cells lack
Membrane Bound organelles, eg nucleus
What type of cells belong to this group?
Barrier and archeans
Eukaryotic cells contain ?
Membrane bound organelles attached to the cytosol
Eukaryotes include all ?
Plant, fungi, animals and protist cells.
The plasma membrane is boundary of all living cells, it controls entry of what?
Dissolved substances into and out of the cell
What makes up the membrane?
A lipid bilayer of protein and fat
All cells must be able to take in and expel various substances across their membranes in order to?
Survive, grow and reproduce
A membrane is described as?
Semi permeable
What is diffusion?
The net movement of substance from an area of high to low concentration
Does the diffusion require an input of energy?
Nope, it is passive
When does diffusion stop?
When the concentration on either side of the membrane is equal
What is osmosis
The net movement of water molecules from an area of high to low con. It does not require energy.
What is a hypotonic solution?
A dilute solution (lots of water, little of other substances)
What’s a hypertonic solution?
Less water (concentrated solution, more of other substances)
What is isotonic solution?
Of equal concentration.
What is active transport?
The moment of dissolved substances through a concentrated gradient
What is this nucleus function?
Controls cell function and metabolism
What is the function of the mitochondria ?
Site of energy in the form of ATP, energy powerhouse of the cell
What is the function of the ribosome ?
The site of protein formation, they build proteins from simple amino acids
