Chapter 2 Study guide Flashcards
(14 cards)
How can matter be classified?
Matter can be classified as an element, a compound, or a mixture.
What is an element?
A substance that can be classified as an element means that it can’t be separated by chemical means.
What is an atom?
The smallest unit of an element that maintains the properties of that element.
What is a molecule?
A group of atoms held together by chemical forces; the smallest unit of matter that can exist by itself.
What is a compound?
A substance made up of atoms or 2 dif elements joined by chemical bonds.
How are elements related to compounds?
Each molecule of a compound contains two or more elements.
What is a pure substance?
A sample of matter, either a single element or a single compound.
What is a mixture?
A combo of 2 or more substances that aren’t chemically combined.
What is a heterogenous mixture and give one example.
A mixture that is unevenly distributed.
ex. Italian salad dressing.
What is homogenous mixture and give one example.
A mixture that is evenly distributed.
ex. Vinegar
