2) Promoting moral improvement

Why did the Gilded Age get it’s name?
Because like something covered in fake gold, during this time period America looked great and prosperous on the outside, but there were some real issues on the inside
Sherman Antitrust Act
Made it illegal to form a trust that interfered with free trade between states or with other countries. Didn’t work because the wore “trust” wasn’t defined so the gov’t stopped trying to enforce it
Clayton Antitrust Act
Sought to strengthen the Sherman Antitrust Act; prohibited corporations from acquiring the stock of another if doing so would create a monopoly. If a company violated the law its officers could be persecuted
Pure Food and Drug Act
No false labeling of food or drugs
Meat Inspection Act
Provided supervision of meat packing and federal inspection
Progressivism
A movement to improve American life by expanding democracy and achieving economic and social success
What problems developed in America due to industrialization
The wages and working conditions were bad leading to violent strikes
Significance of Payne-Aldrich Tariff
First instant where Taft abused the progressives. He had promised to lower tariffs, but by signing this he doubled them
What book did Upton Sinclair write and what was it’s significance
The Jungle it was supposed to point out the problems with the working conditions, but it actually pointed out all the unhealthy issues with the food
What were muckrakers
Reporters, authors, and critics who sought to expose the evils and injustices of the Industrial Age
Initiative
A bill organized by the people rather than lawmakers on the ballot.
Referendum
A vote on the initiative by the voters instead of the legislature.
Recall
Enabled voters to remove public officials from elected position by forcing them to face another election before the end of their term if voters asked for it
