1
Q

Which group are the noble gases?

A

group 0 - full outer shells so they’re unreactive and don’t form bonds

2
Q

what do elements of the same group have in common?

A

the same number of electrons on their outer shell - giving them similar chemical properties

3
Q

which group are the alkali metals?

A

group 1

4
Q

which group are the halogens?

A

group 7

5
Q

what do elements of the same period have in common?

A

the same number of shells

6
Q

What did Newlands discover about the periodic table?

A

The law of octaves - he saw a pattern that every 8th element had similar properties so he started a new row giving the groups on the periodic table

7
Q

what did Mendeleev discover about the periodic table?

A

he ordered the elements by atomic weight and started a new row when/if a characteristic was repeated

8
Q

in what way was Mendeleev’s periodic table successful?

A

He left gaps for undiscovered elements

9
Q

what happened to the reactivity in the elements of group 1?

A

increased

10
Q

what happened to the melting/boiling point of group 1?

A

decreased

11
Q

what happened to the reactivity in group 7?

A

decreased

12
Q

what happened to the boiling point of group 7?

A

Increased
