Constitution
A nation’s basic laws.
Declaration of Independance
Written by Thomas Jefferson, announced the independence of the colonies from England.
Natural Rights
The rights all human beings have in nature, not granted by the government.
Consent of the Governed
Government based on what the majority wants/ common people want.
Limited Government
A government with restrictions on what the ruler can do.
Articles of Confederation
First nation American Government, with the a national legislature, the Continental Congress, but most power rested with the states.
Shay’s Rebellion
Series of revolts to prevent foreclosure on farmers.
U.S. Constitution
Second law system written to form a strong centralized government
Factions
Different groups with severely different interests, all seeking power.
New Jersey Plan
Plan based so all states had equal power in congress.
Virginia Plan
Plan based so t hat states had population based representation in Congress.
Connecticut Compromise
.Compromise to create two houses of congress, one with equal representation and one that was population based.
Writ of Habeas Corpus
Allows immediate inquiry into why one would be detained.
Separation of Powers
Splitting national legislation into three branches.
Checks and Balances
Each branch has power to overrule actions of another.
Republic
System based on consent of the governed in which representatives exercise the public’s power.
Federalists
Supporters of of the republic and the Constitution.
Anti-Federalists
Opposition of the Constitution.
Federalist Papers
.Public papers praising the Constitution.
Bill of Rights
.First ten amendments to the Constitution.
Equal Rights Amendments
Never ratified, proposed amendment, that would’ve given equal rights based on sex.
Marbury V. Madison
Case that established judicial review.
Judicial Review
Determines whether act of congress are constitutional.
