Key Term
Definition
Big Data
Large datasets that are analyzed for human behavior. Accessed through public records or naturally occurring sources.
Case Study/Case History
Research done thoroughly on one person
Confederate
The person who causes change in a social context.
Control Group
Treated like the Experimental grouped without the manipulated factor.
Correlational Research
Research done to see the relationship between variables to find out how two variables.
Cross-sectional Design
A correlation study that measures variables in one point.
Demand Characteristic
Study that tells the participants how the experimenter wants them to be.
Dependent Variable
The outcome of that change. The response made to the change by experimenter.
Descriptive Research
Research to find the basics, like what, how, and when.
Descriptive Statistics
Mathematical procedures used to summarize all data in a meaningful way.
Double-Blind Experiment
Both the experimenter and the participates are clueless to who the controlled group is until the results.
Empirical Method
The gain of knowledge through constant observation, data collection, and logical reasoning.
Experiment
A method where researchers manipulate variables they think can change another variable.
Experimental Group
This group is exposed to change from the independent variable.
Experimenter Bias
Influence of the experimenters thoughts that affect the outcome of research.
External Validity
When an experiment aligns with a real world issue that it has to be addressed.
Hypothesis
A testable prediction made through a logical or educated guess.
Independent Variable
The experimenter makes changes to see results. “A manipulated experimental factor”
Inferential Statistics
Mathematical methods used to show if the data can support the hypothesis.
Internal Validity
A degree that changes in the dependent variable because of the control of the independent variable.
Longitude Design
Systematic observation that obtains measures of variables in many instances throughout a period of time.
Mean
Measure that is everything made into an average for a sample.
Median
Measure that is everything made into a middle score for a sample.
