Chapter 24: Magnetism Flashcards
(6 cards)
What is magnetic force?
Between magnets, it is the attraction of unlike magnetic poles for each other and the repulsion between like magnetic poles.
Between a magnetic field and a moving charged particle, it is a deflecting force due to the motion of the particle.
What is a magnetic field?
The region of magnetic influence around a magnetic pole or a moving charged particle.
Describe the relationship between electric currents and magnetic fields.
A moving electric charge generates a magnetic field. A magnetic field induces electric charge movement, producing an electric current. (Right-hand rule)
What is an electromagnet?
A current-carrying coil of wire. The strength can be increased by increasing the current through the coil.
Describe the effects of a magnetic force on a moving charged particle.
If the charged particle is moving in a magnetic field, the magnetic character of a charge in motion becomes evident. It experiences a deflecting force. The force is greatest when the particles moves perpendicular to the magnetic field.
Describe the effects of a magnetic force on a current-carrying wire.
Moving charged particles deflect when in a magnetic field. Therefore, when the charged particles are enclosed therefore, the enclosure will also bend.
