Chapter 25 Flashcards
(8 cards)
Why is a cancerous growth considered to be clonal?
Because most cancers originate in a single cell
What percent of cancers have an inherited component?
5-10%
Most cancers are related to exposure to what?
Mutagens ie carcinogens like cigarettes
What is a proto-oncogene?
A normal cellular gene that can incur a mutation to become an oncogene
Occurs in four main ways: Missense mutations, gene amplifications, chromosomal translocations, viral integration
What are tumor suppressor genes?
Normal genes that serve to prevent the proliferation of cancer cells
What is the p53 gene?
A tumor suppressor gene
Promotes cellular pathways to prevent division of cells with damaged DNA
About 50% of all human cancers are associated with defects in what gene?
P53
What is APC?
A tumor suppressor gene
