chapter 26 ankylosaurs Flashcards
(11 cards)
Recall the evolutionary novelty shared by all thyreophorans.
the presence of one or more rows of armour plates in the skin above or alongside the vertebral column
What does ankylosaur mean? What does it relate to?
-means fused or stiff lizard
-this realates to the large amount of osteoderms and armour they possessed.
What other evolutionary novelties are shared amongst ankylosauria?
-Ankylosauria have a rod of fused
vertebrae along their backside
-Broadly arched rib cages and
hip girdle
-Small triangular-shaped heads
with low skulls (width between
eyes > height of the skull)
-Closed fenestra & added dermal
bones on the skull
Describe ankylosaur tracks and their diet?
Ankylosaur tracks reveal a slow-moving, wide-bodied dinosaur, while their teeth and jaw structure indicate a specialized herbivorous diet focused on tough, low-growing plants. Their fossils and tracks together paint a picture of heavily armored grazers that thrived in Cretaceous ecosystems.
where and when did Zuul live? and what where its features?
In 2017 a new species of ankylosaur was named following the
discovery of a spectacular specimen from 75 Ma strata in Montana
-skull 50cm and 6 meters in length
can you Explain how the two Ankylosauria clades differ?
-Nodosauridae: non compressed airway with no tail club
-Ankylosauridae: compressed airway and tail club.
How did ankylosaurs defend themselves against predators?
they got low to the ground to defend their stomachs and used their clubs
where and when did Edmontonia live? and what where its features?
is a nodosaur from the Late Cretaceous of
Alberta found in the Dinosaur Park Formation stata 75 Ma
where and when did Euoplocephalus live? and what where its features?
is a ankylosaurid from the Late Cretaceous of Alberta found in the Dinosaur Park Formation stata 75 Ma
where and when did Ankylosaurus live? and what where its features?
-rare fossils in the Hell Creek Formation (68 – 66 Ma), living alongside T-rex, Triceratops, and Edmontosaurus.
-largest known ankylosaurid at
6 to 8 metres in length and weighing in at 6 tonnes (13,000 pounds)
where and when did Borealopelta live? and what where its features?
Early Cretaceous beds (115 Ma) from Alberta
- brown in colour
