Meiji Restoration
Notes- EFFECT of industrialization in Japan. WHC- Americans show up. No more shogunate- Emperor, model after Prussian government. Quickly industrialize and militarize. Japanese students sent over seas- Rapid Westernization.
Framework- economic reforms are state sponsored visions of industrialization. Expansion of US and European leads to emergence of Meiji Japan.
Atlas- 1867- Rebels overthrow shogun and restore emperor. Japanese imperialism- Won in Russo- Japanese war, 1904-1905.

Notes- CAUSES: USA wants whale oil. MATHEW PERRY arrives and threatens them. They choose treaty over war, USA gives gifts: Telegraph, camera, etc. and Japan REPLICATES. EFFECT- Meiji Restoration. Gov sponsored Industrial projects: Cloth for sale abroad, Railroads, telegraph and postal system. Japan becomes IMPERIAL power. Crush Russians in war.
