Migration
Permanent move to a new location.
Mobility
A general term covering all types of movement from one place to another.
Circulation
Short-term, repetitive, cyclical movements that recur regularly.
Emigration
Migration from a location.
Immigration
Migration to a location.
Net Migration
of Immigrants - # of Emigrants (# positive: net-in-migration, # negative: net-out-migration).
International Migration
Permanent move from one country to another.
Voluntary Migration
Migrants have chosen to move, may due to economic or environmental reasons.
Forced Migration
Migrants that are compelled to move due to cultural or environmental factors.
Internal Migration
Permanent move within the same country.
Interregional Migration
Movement from one region of a country to another (rural -> urban).
Intraregional Migration
Movement within one region (within urban, older cities -> new suburbs).
Counter-urbanization
Net migration from urban to rural areas. Can represent rapid expansion of suburbs, or genuine migration from cities to small towns
Refugee
Forced to migrate to avoid the effects of armed conflict, situations of generalized violence, violations of human rights, or other disasters and cannot return for fear of persecution because of race, religion, nationality, membership in a social group, or political opinion.
Internally Displaced Person (IDP)
Forced to migrate for similar political reasons as a refugee, but has not crossed international borders.
Asylum Seeker
Someone who has migrated to another country in hopes of being recognized as a refugee.
Floodplain
An area subject to flooding during a specific number of years, based on historical trends.
Desertification (Semiarid Land Degradation)
Deterioration of land to a desertlike condition typically due to human actions.
Intervening Obstacle
An environmental or political feature that hinders migration.
Remittance
Transfer of money by workers to people in the country from which they emigrated.
Unauthorized Immigration
Those who immigrate illegally without proper documents (term preferred by academic observers).
Undocumented Immigration
Those who immigrate illegally without proper documents (term preferred by groups that advocate for more rights for these individuals).
Illegal Alien
Those who immigrate illegally without proper documents (term preferred by groups that favor tougher restrictions and enforcement of immigration laws).
Quotas
Maximum limits on the number of people who could immigrate to the United States during a one-year period (Does not apply to immigrants, spouses, children, parents - U.S.).
