Chapter 3 Flashcards
(48 cards)
Immunity developed after the body overcomes a disease, or through inoculation
Acquired Immunity
Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome; a disease caused by the HIV virus that breaks down the body’s immune system
AIDS
Chemical agents that may kill, retard, or prevent the growth of bacteria; not classified as disinfectants
Antiseptics
Process of properly handling sterilized and disinfected equipment and supplies so that they do not become contaminated by microorganisms until they are used on a client
Aseptic Procedure
Showing no symptoms or signs of infection
Asymptomatic
Apparatus for sterilization by steam under pressure
Autoclave
Short, rod-shaped bacteria; the most common bacteria; produce diseases such as tetanus (lockjaw), typhoid fever, tuberculosis, and diphtheria
Bacilli (singular: bacillus)
One-celled microorganisms with both plant and animal characteristics; some are harmful; also known as microbes or germs
Bacteria
Capable of destroying bacteria
Bactericidal
Disease-causing bacteria or viruses that are carried through the body in the blood or body fluids
Blood borne pathogens
Round bacteria that appear alone or in groups
Cocci
Communicable or transmittable by contact
Contagious
Substances that can cause contamination
Contaminants
When an object or product has microorganisms in or on it
Contaminated
Contamination that occurs when you touch an object, such as the skin, and then touch an object or product with the same hand or utensil
Cross-contamination
Removal of pathogens and other substances from tools and surfaces
Decontamination
Spherical bacteria that grows in pairs and causes diseases such as pneumonia
Diplococci
Chemical agents used to destroy most bacteria and some viruses and to disinfect implements and surfaces
Disinfectants
Second highest level of decontamination, nearly as effective as sterilization but does not kill bacterial spores; used on hard, nonporous surfaces
Disinfection
Effectiveness
Efficacy
Vegetable (plant) parasites, including molds, mildews, and yeasts
Fungi (singular: fungus)
Capable of destroying fungi
Fungicidal
Infection that results when the bloodstream carries bacteria or viruses and their toxins (poisons) to all parts of the body
General infection
Disease marked by inflammation of the liver and caused by a bloodborne virus
Hepatitis
