What is culture?
The complex systems of values, traits, morals, and customs shared by a society, region, or country.
What are the three types of cuture?
- Geogrphy
- History
- Religion
What is culture geography?
The way people inhabit their worlds is different.
What is culture history?
Canada is a part of the commonwealth, Canada has two different national languages.
What is religion culture?
Values of the country’s main religions affect the country’s residence.
What is low context culture?
Prefer direct, verbal interactions, value individualism, say no or refuse requests directly.
What is high context culture?
Prefers more indirect verbal interaction, don’t directly state what you want, value group membership, avoid saying no directly.
What is individualism?
Independence, freedom from control, measure personal achievement.
What is collective?
Resist independence, value groups or organizations, look for consensus.
What is low time orientation?
Correlate time with efficiency, time is money/
What is high time orientation?
Perceive time more holistically, relaxed concept of time.
What is low power distance?
More relaxed about social status.
What is high power distance?
More formal hierarchy, greater emphasis placed on greater social status.
What is low communication style?
Emphasis is on the words, literal meaning.
What is high communication style?
Emphasis is on the surrounding concept, tone of voice, facial expressions, body language, meeting locations.
What is a stereotype?
A broad, often oversimplified assumption made about all members of a particular group.
What is ethnocentrism?
The attitude that ones own group or nationality is superior to others.
How to approach spoken communication?
- Use simple English
- Speak slowly
- Check for comprehension
- Don’t interrupt
What are the steps to communicate better across cultures?
- Value differences
- Avoid assumptions
- Build on similarities
How to approach written communication?
- Consider local styles
- Use a translator
- Craft short sentences
- Avoid ambiguity
