Chapter 3 Flashcards
(15 cards)
Acid
dissolves some metals, and turns litmus red; typically, a corrosive or sour-tasting liquid of this kind.
Indicators
a compound that changes color at a specific pH value or in the presence of a particular substance and can be used in the progress of a reaction.
Base
a substance capable of reacting with an acid to form a salt and water, accepting or neutralizing hydrogen ions.
Chemical bond
the combining of atoms to form molecules or compounds
Ionic compound
a compound made oppositely charged ions
Covalent compound
a chemical combound formed by the sharing of electrons
neutralization reaction
the reaction of an acid and a base to form a neutrual solution of water and salt
pH
a value that is used to express the acidity or basicity of a system
Salt
an ionic compound that forms when a metal atom replaces the hydrogen of an acid
Organic compound
a covalently bonded compound that contains carbon
Hydrocarbon
an organic compound composed only of carbon and hydrogen
Carbonhydrate
a class of energy giving nutrients that includes sugars starches and fiber composed of one or more sugars.
lipid
biochemical that doesn’t dissolve in water/ fats and steroids
Protien
molecule that’s made up of amino acids and build and repair body structures to regulate process in the body
Nucleic Acid
molecule made up of subunits called nucleotides
