Chapter 3 Flashcards
(22 cards)
Pure substance
Only one type of particle
What is an element
Hey pure substance that cannot be separated into simpler substances by physical or chemical means
Why does an hot air balloon go up on release
Helium is less dense than air
How are elements classified
Groups according to shared properties
What are elements divided into
- metals
- non metals
- metalloids
Metals
- shiny
- good conductors of thermal energy and electric current
- malleable
- ductile
Nonmetals
- dull
- poor conductors of thermal energy and electric current
- brittle
- unmalleable
Metalloids
- semi conductors
- properties of both metal and non metal
Compound
Pure substance composed of two or more elements that are chemically combined
What has to happen for the elements to combine
They must react or undergo the chemical change
What happens when a compound forms
The elements join a specific ratio according to their masses
Can compounds be broken down by physical changes
No
Mixture
Combo of two or more substances that are not chemically combined
Mixture that appears to be a single substance but is composed of particles of two or more substances that are spread evenly amongst eachother
Solution
Substance that is dissolved
Solute
Substance in which the solute is dissolved
Solvent
A measure of the amount of solute dissolved in a solvent
Concentration
Amount of a solute needed to make a saturated solution using a given amount of solvent at a certain temperature.
Solubility
Mixture in which particles of a material are dispersed throughout a liquid or gas but are large enough to settle out
Suspension
Mixture in which particles are dispersed throughout but aren’t heavy enough to settle out
Colloid
What are some ways you can separate a mixture
Filteration and evaporation
Can the components of a mixture be mixed in any proportion
Yes
